A while back I was attending a 5-day convention in Phoenix. I was staying at the Hilton, and they charged $8 per day for parking. Because I was one of the convention’s leaders, I frequently needed my car, and the only way I could get it was by using Valet Parking.

I was on a budget and tips were not covered. The second day of the convention I needed the car and didn’t have much currency in my pocket. So I tipped a $1 when I got the car.

The next time I needed my car from the garage, it took forever to get it. I couldn’t figure it out. When I got in my car, I saw a note lying on the seat that said “cheap tipper”. I had been labeled; and from that day forward, the parking attendants were slow getting my car.

Was I right in tipping only $1?

Were the parking attendants right in labeling me a “cheap tipper”?

Was there a way to remedy this label attached to me?

Is tipping expected? Why?
