Parent/Teacher Conferences

Recently, Parker High School reviewed its procedures on who has access to students and who does not. What brought the matter to our attention was an incident where a person listed as an emergency contact for a student attempted to check a student out of school.

 

THIS WAS NOT AN ABDUCTION SITUATION but the emergency contact person did not have the permission of the parent to check the student out of school. In the past, generally speaking, if a person was listed on a student demographic form then they had access to the student. In this case, the student was not taken out of school but, when the parent found out about the attempt to take the student out of school, the parent came in to the school and had this emergency contact person removed as an emergency contact.

 

The parent shared their concern about the incident and felt that emergency contact people were to only be contacted in an emergency and should not be able to have

access to a student at school. The parent’s point was well taken. This has caused us to rethink our procedure in this matter and have made the following adjustments:

 

· People listed as Emergency Contacts will only be contacted if all attempts to contact the parent/guardian have been unsuccessful and it is a true “emergency” requiring immediate attention.

· People listed as Emergency Contacts will not have access to students unless we have received notification from the parent/guardian.

· Generally speaking, contact with people listed as Emergency Contacts will be initiated by the school, not by the Emergency Contact.

Students will only be released to a parent/guardian unless the school has been notified by the parent/guardian to release the student to someone else.
