1st Grading Period - Working in a school library

The following assignments are designed to give students opportunities to learn more about working in a school library. These activities are included with the daily participation grade.

 

Assignment 1

1. Log in to your PHS computer account. Go to your student folder on "my computer". You should have an LIS folder there with 4 subfolders. If not, please see Mrs. Leivas.

2.  Read about PHS library procedures for shelving books.

3.  Read about the Dewey Decimal system.

4. Take this online quiz.

5. Choose a novel for GP1. Get it approved by Mrs. Leivas.

Assignment 2

1. Choose your shelf area. 

2. Review the daily duties section on this website.

3. Learn to use Destiny's Library Catalog and Circulation. Demonstrate your understanding to Mrs. Leivas.

Assignment 3:  

1.  Use Word Art in MS Word to create 20 shelf markers with your name. Check with Mrs. Leivas for construction paper color. Laminate and cut these markers according to directions from Mrs. Leivas.

2. Review the PHS Library Science  website.  Complete the evaluation tool. 

Assignment 4

1. Create a poster for the "Meet the Library Staff" bulletin board.

2. Use MS Publisher to create a visual representation that  introduces you This poster must include (but is not limited to the following info:

bulletYour photo
bulletYour name
bulletGraduation Year
bulletHobbies/ Sports/etc
bulletKinds of books you like to read
bulletA book you'd recommend reading
bulletAnything else that shows your personality

3. Save poster to your LIS folder. Print poster and give to Mrs. Leivas

Assignment 5:  

1. Choose 2 books that you would like to recommend to other students. Students need to be able to check these books out from the libray, so if you want to recommend one that we don't have, please talk to me first.

2. Use MS Publisher to create posters illustrating your books. You can be creative, but you must include your name (or signature) and a photo of the book cover. See samples from other class.

3. Save poster as a jpeg to LIS GP1 folder.

4. Use MS Excel and insert the poster jpeg.

5. Go to File - Page Setup and change orientation to landscape.

6. Insert your jpeg. Go to View-Zoom-Selection and View- page break preview

7. Click on the botton right corner dot (or circle) and then resize the jpeg so it is 3 pages down and almost 2 across. 6. Save poster to your LIS GP1 folder.

8. Print poster and give to Mrs. Leivas

Assignment 6 :  Using the laminator.

Use the laminator to laminate your shelf markers. Discuss the points to remember with Mrs. Leivas.

Assignment 7:  AV equipment and bulbs

Have Mrs. Leivas or an LIS II student explain the procedures for AV equipment and bulbs.

Assignment 8

Show Mrs. Leivas where books can be found for each of the following 10 categories:

Fiction A-L, Fiction M-Z, Biographies(92 section), Collected Biographies (920 section), Story Collection (SC section), back issues of National Geographic and AZ Highways, Reference books, collected biographies, Story Collection, Non-fiction areas, career area, English dept. books.

Assignment 9 

Ask Mrs. Leivas to give you the shelving quiz.

Assignments 10

Learn how to cover a book with mylar. Cover 2-3 books and have Mrs. Leivas evaluate your work.

Assignments 11

Use the patron's catalog and conduct a search for books about a subject of your interest.

Assignments 12

Use the patron's catalog and conduct a keyword search using "abuse" and then a 2nd search using "abus*" Report to Mrs. Leivas how many items you found for "abuse" and how many for "abus*"

Assignments 13

Use the patron's catalog and conduct an expanded search using "abus*" and then NOT "child". How many results did you find?
How do these results compare to Assign. 13 results. Explore other possible searches using the Expanded Search
feature.

Assignment 14: 

Using Destiny Library Catalog, create a list of books. Print the list and submit to Mrs. Leivas.

Assignment 15: 

Help a student with the patron's catalog.
