Hello!  This is some updated information about the Alternative Classroom .I hope this will help you better understand how this room can be utilized to students and teachers benefit .I hope this will help you better understand what needs to be done in order to send a student to the Alternative Classroom.

I am Vicki Lotts I am the Alternative Classroom Supervisor .This is my 7th year here at Parker High. My direct supervisor is Mrs. McGuire .Of course Dr .Shontz will also assign students here as well.

Dr. Shontz designed this program over 7 years ago .We liken it to an "adult time out" .My room is where students who are disruptive in a classroom come for that hour only. Dr .Shontz did not want students removed from all their classes for days on end .That system was of no benefit to students who only have difficulty in one class. The alternative classroom is not the punishment for bad behavior. ASD and suspension are used for that .We want to deescalate potentially volatile situations .As Dr .Shontz always says" We want to put out fires, not throw kerosene on them."

My room is a quiet setting where students can regroup and be ready to move on to their next class without disruption .I have one main rule in my room .It is "Respect is a two way street .I am respectful to you .I expect you to be respectful to me." I also keep my room quiet so that a student may calm down in here.

Here is an example of a situation where my room would be used. Lets say "John Lotts" is continually talking during class time .You as the teacher have tried numerous ways to quiet him down .He decides to curse at you .At this time you would write a discipline referral, call the office and let them know you are sending him with the referral to see Mrs. McGuire or Dr .Shontz (in the event Mrs. McGuire is not there) ***Remember you must always send the student to the office with a discipline referral and work.  Mrs. McGuire may assign him ASD. She may also assign him to my room for the hour he would be in your class for one day or even two days. You must send work for the student to do in my room .Depending on the severity of the situation and how upset the student is, it may not be completed .THEY STILL MUST HAVE ASSIGNED WORK .I am not the teacher .

My room can also be utilized by teachers for a student that has difficulty focusing .Perhaps he or she needs to take a high stakes test and needs a quiet place to do that. My room can be a resource for you to use in that case.

One last scenario sometimes arises for teachers. Perhaps there is just a personality conflict and you need a mini break for a day or so. Discuss this with me or Mrs. McGuire and she can assign that student if she feels the situation warrants it.

No students can be sent directly to me without first speaking with me , Mrs. McGuire or Dr .Shontz .They will okay students coming here .In the case of high stakes test taking let Mrs .McGuire and me know .We certainly will try to accommodate your needs.

I rarely have a full room and can usually accommodate your requests .There are those days that I may have to supervise a class in here due to lack of Subs .On those rare occasions quiet testing may not be able to happen here .I also proctor AIMS tests and on those days am not available. ¼ makeup tests are also done in my room. You will be notified of this prior to test time.

I hope this information is of help to you.

I can be found in my room #32 or the main office , as I also assist Mrs .Hucklebridge with office tasks.

Feel free to ask me any questions you have .Know that I am here to help you as well as the students.

Have a great year!
