PARKER — It was a pitchers’ battle Thursday as the River Valley Dust Devils’ Sarah Leal and the Parker Lady Broncs’ Sherrie Irwin dueled on a cold, windy afternoon. River Valley came out ahead in the end, 1-0.
Leal gave up just four hits, while Irwin gave up five. Leal struck out four, while Irwin struck out two and walked two.
In the first inning, it looked like Leal might have to leave the game as she was struck in the shin by a line drive hit by Sherrie Irwin. She walked it off and was able to continue the game. Irwin was credited with a single on the play.
The only run in the game came in the top of the fifth inning. River Valley’s Olivia Leal was safe at first on an error, and advanced to second on a bunt by Aijah Gillespie. Elizabeth Estes struck out, but the third strike got past Parker catcher Mikayla Braska. Estes was out a first base, but Olivia Leal advanced to third on the throw. She then scored when Brooke Shermak singled.
The defensive play of the game came in the top of the second. The Dust Devils’ Rachel Wiseman singled, and then Rachel Payne smacked a line drive that almost landed on the foot of Parker first baseman Lindsey Fisher. Fisher caught the ball just before it would’ve hit the ground for one out, and then stepped on first for the second out of an unassisted double play.
Players who got hits for River Valley included Estes, Shermak, Hayley Page, Wiseman, and Payne.
In addition to Irwin, other Parker players who got hits included Ashley Alarcon, Jasmine Ruiz, and Jenna Brewer.
This was the last regular season game for both teams. The Dust Devils have a final record of 19-12, while the Lady Broncs broke even at 11-11. Both schools are in the 3A West regional playoffs, which will be played this weekend. As of press time, the match-ups and sites had not been announced.
