Parker beats Winslow, 21-18, in football playoff opener
Staff reports

WINSLOW — Hard driving rain and strong winds weren’t going to keep the Broncs out of the end zone — just out of the air.

No. 12 Parker (7-4) used a ground and pound game plan to control the clock and take a first round upset of No. 5 Winslow (7-6), 21-18, in the Arizona Interscholastic Association Division IV playoffs, Friday, in Winslow.

“We knew we could beat Winslow, so we came in confident,” said PHS head coach Jeff Spiwak. “We wanted to run, and with that wind and rain, it really became a field position game.”

The first half was all Parker, as Angelo Gonzalez snapped off a 60 yard run on the opening series, a drive capped by Gonzalez’s first touchdown of the night.

Two series later, the Parker defense rose to the occasion and intercepted Winslow quarterback James Martinez. Two plays later, the Broncs used a little trickery to get the Bulldogs tripping over their own feet.

Angelo Gonzalez lined up at quarterback and regular Parker QB Louis Golding was at wide receiver. On the snap, Golding stepped back, took a lateral pass from Angelo Gonzalez, then Golding let loose a rocket that Luis Gonzalez caught midstride and ran in for another Broncs’ score.

With time winding down in the first half, the Bulldogs finally got their offense in gear and got in the red zone. Facing a fourth-and-goal from the one, the Broncs’ defense made another big play and forced the turnover on downs.

One play later, Angelo Gonzalez shot through the hole created by the Broncs’ line, and scampered 99 yards for the touchdown.

“Our line did an excellent job tonight,” Spiwak said.

Twice in the second half, Winslow had a chance to take the lead but the Broncs’ defense was able to shut the Bulldogs down. On a fourth and goal late in the fourth quarter, the Parker secondary broke up a pass and forced a turnover on downs.

And with time running out in the game, Winslow was stuffed on a fourth-and-four. But a facemask call gave the Bulldogs a second try to get the winning score. Once again, the Broncs’ defensive line and linebackers were up to the challenge, stuffing the run on a fourth-and-one to lock down the victory.

“We knew what we had to do tonight. Or game plan was to stop their run and that’s what we did,” Spiwak.

The Broncs advance to the quarterfinals, where they’ll face No. 4 Chandler Seton Catholic (11-0). The Saints defeated No. 13 Chinle (6-4), 72-18, Friday.

“That game will be on a neutral field and anything can happen,” Spiwak said. “We know we just have to execute our game plan. And when we do, I’m confident we can play with anyone.”

The quarterfinal game at Paradise Valley High School, will take place on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 3 p.m.

In other Division IV playoff football action: No. 11 Tucson Empire defeated No. 6 River Valley, 17-13, in Mohave Valley, Friday.
