It was cold and windy for the state 3A golf meet May 10 and 11 in Snowflake. The two Parker Broncs who went played well despite the elements.

Brian Goldsberry shot a 93 for the first day and a 96 for the second day for a score of 189 over 36 holes. He placed 19th overall. Mitchell Newman shot an 86 for the first day, but then shot a 115 for the second day. He placed 38th overall.

Coach Bob Firlein said Newman had problems with winds of up to 50 mph on the second day.

The top 3A golfer was Kyle Jones of Snowflake, who shot a 149 for the two days. Snowflake was also the team champion for the state. Firlein said four of the top ten golfers were from Snowflake.

Firlein said it was a good season for the Broncs gold team.

"Our goal was to get some to state," he said. "We didn't go as a team, but two went."

Firlein said he expected a great season next year. Goldsberry will be graduating, but Newman will be returning, along with top players like Jordan Purser and Jeff McCormack, and rising young players like Rene Gallan.

In addition to Goldsberry, golfers Shelby Kracht and Andrew Jones are also graduating.

Two players with the Parker Broncs golf team were at the state tournament Monday and Tuesday this week in Snowflake. While the team as a whole failed to qualify at the regionals last week, golfers Brian Goldsberry and Mitchell Newman qualified for state.

Coach Bob Firlein said Goldsberry and Newman, who have had a friendly rivalry going all season, both finished with scores of 170 over the two-day, 36-hole 3A West regional tournament, which will held May 3 and 4 in Goodyear, Ariz.

The top four teams from the 3A West which went to the state match were Estrella Foothills, Chino Valley, River Valley, and Wickenburg. Parker placed fifth at the regionals, and Sedona placed sixth.

Firlein said he believed Goldsberry and Newman would do very well at state. He said he believe the team to beat was the host team, Snowflake.

"Their top five guys all shoot in the 70s over 18 holes," he said. "That's pretty good."

The Parker Broncs' golf team had two matches last week, and Brian Goldsberry emerged as the team's top player in both of them. He had scores of 39 for both 9-hole matches.

The Broncs played Chino Valley and Camp Verde at home Tuesday, April 20, and won the match with a team score of 180 strokes. Chino's score was 205, while Camp Verde's was 224.

In addition to Goldsberry's 39 for the nine holes, Mitchell Newman shot a 46, Shelby Kracht shot a 45, and Andrew Jones shot a 50.

The Broncs played at Estrella Foothills April 22 in Goodyear, Ariz., , and they faced tough competition from the Estrella Foothills Wolves and the Scottsdale Christian Eagles, the defending 2009 state 2A champions. The Eagles and Wolves had a close duel, and the Broncs couldn't keep up. The final totals were Eagles 159, Wolves 161, and Broncs 195.

Coach Bob Firlein said the weather played a role, as it was a cold and windy afternoon.

Goldsberry again shot 39, Jones had 49, Newman shot a 53, and Jeff McCormick shot a 55.

Firlein said he was very impressed with Goldsberry posting two scores of 39. He said he's peaking just in time for the regionals. He said he and Newman could be the team's top player on any given day.

"We need a couple more people to shot in the low 40s, and we'll be okay," he said.

On Monday of this week, the Broncs played 18 holes at Chino Valley. The regionals will be on May 3 and 4 at Estrella Foothills. They will play 36 holes over the two days.

The Broncs golf team had two matches this past week. They played Chino Valley to a 176-176 tie on April 14 at home, and then placed third in a match with Yuma Catholic and Antelope April 15 in Wellton, Ariz.

Against Chino, Mitchell Newman led the Broncs and all golfers with a score of 39 over nine holes. Brian Goldberry was right behind him with 40. Andrew Jones shot a 48, and Shelby Kracht shot a 49.

In Wellton, the Broncs' combined score of 180 was behind Yuma Catholic's 152 and Antelope's 160, but Parker Coach Bob Firlein said these two teams were very good.

Goldsberry and Newman continued to be Parker's top players as each compiled a score of 42. Jones shot a 47, while Kracht's score was 49.

Firlein said the team has continued to grow and improve as the season moves along. He said he hoped the team will peak around the time of the 3A West regionals and the state meet in early May. He made note of the progress of some of the younger golfers, especially freshman Reni Gallan.

On Thursday of this week, the Broncs will play the front nine at Estrella Foothills. Firlein said this is where the regional tourament will be played.

PARKER — The Broncs golf team came away with a tie in their match against 3A West rival Chino Valley Wednesday afternoon at the Emerald Canyon Golf Course north of Parker. The two teams took the totals of their four best scores, and the result was both had 176 strokes.

Parker’s Mitchell Newman led all golfers in the match with a score of 39 over nine holes. Brian Goldsberry was second for Parker with 40 strokes. Andrew Jones shot a 49, and Shelby Kracht shot a 48.

Broncs’ Coach Bob Firlein has remarked that Newman or Goldsberry could be the top golfer on any given day. He said the friendly rivalry between them has made both of them better at the game.

Firlein said the team shows improvement with each match as the season moves along.

“That’s the way I want it,” he said. “I want them to peak at the end of the season with the playoffs.”

The Broncs’ next match will be this afternoon, when they had to Wellton to play the Antelope Rams.

The Parker Broncs golf team came up short against their opponents in a pair of matches last week. However, Coach Bob Firlein said they have been posting consistently good scores, and showing improvement as the season moves along.

The Broncs hosted Yuma Catholic and Antelope March 23 at their home course, the Emerald Canyon Golf Course north of Parker. It was a nine-hole match. With six golfers on each team and the top four scores being counted into the total, the Yuma Catholic Shamrocks were the top team with 164 strokes. The Antelope Rams shot 182 strokes, while the Broncs shot 184.

Brian Goldsberry led Parker with 42 strokes, while Mitchell Newman shot a 44. Shelby Kracht shot a 50 and Jordan Purser shot a 53.

The Broncs traveled to Blythe, Calif. March 24 to face the Palo Verde Yellow Jackets in a nine-hole match. The Broncs again came up short, as Palo Verde won 178 strokes to 190.

Goldsberry and Newman led Parker with 43 strokes each. Kracht shot a 51 while Andrew Jones shot a 53.

Other Bronc golfers who went to Palo Verde included Reni Gallan, Andrew Honadick and Brooke Chambers.

Firlein noted Goldsberry and Mitchell have emerged as the team's top players, and he said the two of them push each other in a friendly rivalry. This has made both of them better golfers.

"On any given day, either of them could emerge with the top score," he said.

Firlein said the team has been consistently improving over the course of the season, and he hopes they will peak at the time for regionals and the state tournament. He said he's impressed with the top four or five golfers he has right now.

This week, the Broncs will get a chance to see the course for the regionals March 30 when they travel to Goodyear, Ariz., to play the Estrella Foothills Wolves. On March 31, they'll be back at home to face River Valley. Tee time is 2 p.m.
