Your task is to research poets of the past and present. You will choose a poet that interests you and write a one to two page paper on the life of your poet, the types of poems they wrote, and write a reaction to one of their poems; your choice. (A reaction is simply your thoughts on what the poems means, the impact it had on you and others, and a critique: was the poem good, too long, what could make it better, what was good about it, etc...) Along with your research on poets, you will research different types of poems. Choose your favorite poetic form and write a poem in that form, which you will share with the class. For students wishing to attain extra credit, you will be given the opportunity to participate in a poetry slam. There are links to poetry slams on the resource page. You will need to study about the slams and create your own slam. Student can choose to be judges, or participants in the slam; both judges and participants will receive extra credit. Participants will receive more points than judges, but both will be given extra credit. I will explain more about this assignment as students show interest. These slams will be done at the end of the unit. |
